I’m usually a little cautious about introducing computer-based learning into our homeschool.  You know, because we’re into living books, being outdoors, and all that Charlotte Mason inspired goodness.

But, I’m also very much into tailoring (and tweaking) educational approaches to what works best for each child.  I appreciate a variety of ways to explain concepts and to cement learning.

And well, homeschool Moms sometimes need support from the pros. 🙂

In the past, I’ve purchased annual subscriptions for online math practice as supplement to our core curriculum.  So when the opportunity came to review Uzinggo Math & Science, my interest was piqued.  This was definitely an area for which we’ve used the computer.

I hoped my children and I would find it a valuable resource — and we did!

How Uzinggo Works as Online Tutoring

Uzinggo offers learning support for middle school and high school in both math and science.  The website boasts of a self-paced set of interactive video lessons for every concept.  These are not randomly organized, but rather flow on a pre-arranged path in order to build learning (called Zingpaths; but you can skip around).

Courses for:

• Foundational Math (5th/6th grade), Pre-Algebra
• Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II
• Biology, Chemistry, Physics (with virtual labs!)
• Earth & Space Science for middle and high school

Consistent feedback and assessment of the child’s work is offered throughout the lesson; reports and evaluations easily printed for future reference.  Uzzingo helps parents as well – tutorials, progress reports to track learning, teaching guides, and more!

The BEST part of using Uzinggo for homeschooling?  Moving easily from one level or subject to another (say Pre-Algebra to Algebra 1) within the year — or back again for more practice if needed!

This program can be used as a full curriculum or as a supplement, your choice. To add motivational spice, you’ll find a points-based reward system.

While I think a kid could get too caught up in the amount of options, we also found donations to charities on the list.  Nice!

Uzzingo 5th Grade Online Math

We have access to the entire programs for jr. high and high school, but I chose to start with Math Foundations (comes with jr. high math purchase).  My daughter is a just-got-her-feet-wet 5th grader, and we’re using a core curriculum.

Uzinggo is our supplement, but after sitting with her to complete a few video lessons, I can tell this will be a highlight in our year!

One lesson on comparing decimals was especially helpful.  Not only were concepts presented visually and then talked through step-by-step, but the multi-layered approach helps the learner really understand the lesson.

See what I’m talking about:

#1 above –  decimal is written out in word form as the student fills in the visual

#2 the pictorial representation of the decimal part of the number (I caught this mid-stream as she filled these in)

#3  above – student orders the decimals from least to greatest

#4  the decimal numbers are also represented on a number line

(ignore the random #1 up there – I think another car race was about to begin! :))

My daughter kept saying – ‘oh yes, I get it!’ as she completed lessons on decimals, money, and more.  She’s convinced this will be fun, and so am I.

We’ve barely tapped into the benefits of this math and science resource.  I can tell already it will be more beneficial than other math subscriptions we’ve used.
