Our 2012 – 2013 homeschool plans include combining some Before FIAR and FIAR Volume 1-3 books for my 3 and 6 year old boys.  I’m tailoring our lesson plans towards a preschooler and 1st grader.  We’ve not used this curriculum before, and in reality, we’re not following the plans exactly.  But the spirit of reading & re-reading and doing activities across the curriculum will be there.

I’ve outlined in detail which books we’ll do by season — finding it easier and more natural to follow seasons, family interests and celebrations.  Check out the post!

When planning, I’m finding several books and website spaces quite helpful and wanted to share them:

FIAR Specific Websites

Homeschool Share FIAR Resources - full, full, full of FREE lapbooks and printables, all indexed by FIAR volumes

Delightful Learning - Michelle’s blog inspired me to try FIAR in the first place!  Inspiration and practical helps galore

Homeschool Creations - more FREE printables, especially for Before FIAR :: also check out her Read, Build, Write pages which we’ll use for my 1st grader

My FIAR Pinterest Board - where I’m gathering ideas, links, fun stuff and extras to match our book journeys!

FIAR Planning Sheet - this is the planning sheet I’m using for each book

The FIAR archives - you have to be a member to view, I’m offering it here though I haven’t used this much – finding enough info other places!

The FIAR forums - I’ve found several gems here for activities or extra book suggestions

Other Books & Resources for FIAR planning

I’ve written a whole post on finding great literature for children, but here are a few I’ll use particularly for FIAR:

Prop Box Play - we’ve owned this book for years!  full of great themes with dozens of ideas for preschool dramatic play including props lists, vocabulary words, extension activities, and reading lists for each theme (to find go-along books for your primary FIAR read-aloud!)

Literature for Lively Lessons - another great book for finding go-along books.  I did a review on this resource over at The Curriculum Choice!

Other Resources:

Notebooking Pages

because I’ll be working with my 1st grader as well, some narration and copywork will be included.  Notebooking Pages is my go-to resource for oodles of printables (some FREE).  And with the new Notebooking Publisher, which allows us to make our OWN pages, I think we’re set!

YouTube and Discovery Streaming PLUS

FREE and paid resources for finding short video clips to match FIAR book themes or topics (countries, weather, animals, etc!).  Discovery Streaming is pricey, we had snagged a deeply discounted one-year membership earlier this year through homeschool buyer’s co-op (I’ll be using Discovery across the curriculum with all of our kiddos).

Enchanted Learning - any FREE printables (lots of science & history ones) that match our topics, I’ll use primarily for the 1st grader

Education Cubes - for the preschooler and some for the 1st grader as well, I can’t wait to try out our new membership to these printables for fun games and learning!
